The bacchae sparknotes5/23/2023 ![]() He is finally forced to acknowledge that the licentiousness he had condemned is what he is drawn to and wants to witness.Ĭan Dionysus be called a champion of women? He is driven to question his own beliefs, and loses his willpower, ending up in Dionysus's grasp. He realizes, in the course of their conversations, that Dionysus has the upper hand, that is, that the reasoning of irrationality is stronger than himself. Aside from the threat to the kingdom, Dionysus appears to Pentheus as a threat to him personally. Dionysus is "that which cannot be conquered." His fundamental antipathy towards Dionysus and what he represents leads Pentheus to brand the bacchic revelers as profligate, accusing them of lawlessness. As the chorus sings, Dionysus not only disrupts civic order. Pentheus sees himself as protecting a civilized society and does not want a force in his realm that he cannot imprison, let alone control. ![]() In Pentheus's scheme, in a tightly controlled society such as his there can be no room even for Dionysus's less intense powers, for even they involve relaxing restraints and breaking barriers, antithetical to Pentheus's sovereign rigor. To Pentheusmdash the ruler of Thebes and the protector of law and order-the luxurious stranger is Eastern and Barbarian, insidiously beautiful and suspiciously charming. ![]() ![]() The long-haired, ruddy-cheeked, laughing Dionysus displays no overtly frightening qualities, but Pentheus takes an instant dislike to him. Why is Dionysus, as the Stranger, perceived as dangerous by Pentheus? ![]()

But when she’s shortlisted for the promotion of her dreams, all her sacrifices finally seem worth it. Summaryīetween taking night classes for her MBA and her demanding day job at a cruise line, marketing manager Henley Evans barely has time for herself, let alone family, friends, or dating. ![]() ![]() Sure it wasn’t a perfect romance but it made me happy and kept me entertained and really that’s all that matters. I was fully ready for the romance, escapism and the exotic location. I couldn’t wait to read this one the second it arrived. Not to mention this book is set mostly on a cruise ship in the Galapagos Islands! The two characters, Henley and Graeme, are up for the same promotion and I thought that scenario might bring up some interesting competitiveness between the sexes. The cover is adorable and the enemies to lovers troupe is one of my favorites. ![]() I thought the cover was cute and I was looking for a quick easy read that I would enjoy and escape for a little while and since I am dealing with a major case of wanderlust, I thought this book would tick all the boxes. This book has been all over my Instagram and I finally caved and bought it. This is a book I bought all thanks to ‘the gram’. ![]()

The house of the spirits novel5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() This description represents how he tells his stories of history in the novel. Esteban builds a “cubic, dense, pompous house, which sits like a hat amidst its green and geometric surroundings”(92). ![]() ![]() The structure that Esteban builds is the outside and the foundation of the house. The house has two structures that must be observed in order to understand the entire home, one being inspired by Esteban, and the other being inspired by Clara. Through the use of symbolism, the house on the corner is representative of the Trueba’s history and how the family’s history is told through dichotomy. In the novel, “The House of the Spirits”, the author, Isabel Allende uses the symbolism of the house on the corner and the viewpoints of Esteban and Clara’s notebooks to show the reader that in order to understand the history of the Trueba family, multiple viewpoints must be taken into consideration. ![]()

Dorothy must die book5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() And despite Amy being in situations throughout the book where she was told what to do, she would constantly break away and make her own decisions (even if it was to the determent of others). ![]() One of my pet peeves about YA books is that the protagonists rarely feel like they are actually pushing the narrative forward, and instead simply doing what other people tell them to do. There are definitely weaknesses to it and I left the book with a lot of questions for the sequel, but it doesn’t fall into as many tropes as many YA and it really kept me guessing as to where the plot would go next. And Amy is given a mission: kill Dorothy. Amy is recruited into the Order, a resistance with the goal of taking down Dorothy. Dorothy has seized power, enslaving monkeys, munchkins, and all the rest of Oz. But this Oz is nothing like the one in the children’s book. That is, until Amy literally gets blown up into the sky in a tornado with her mother’s pet rat and gets deposited in Oz. She grew up hearing stories of Dorothy and Oz. Her life has never been easy, bullied by kids. Synopsis: Amy Gumm grew up in Kansas in a grimy trailer park with an alcoholic mother. And, for the most part, I enjoyed this book. I mean, it’s a dark retelling of The Wizard of Oz, which I grew up with in both book and movie form. So when I saw this for $1 at my local book thrift store, I had to pick it up. I’ve talked about in the past how much of a sucker I am for classic retellings. ![]()

Taylor jenkins reid new book 20225/22/2023 ![]() Each platform works slightly differently, and, of course, the boundaries between them are permeable and ever-shifting. On platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, readers are taking critical authority into their own hands to create new kinds of discourse and connection. ![]() ![]() ![]() This collision of one of our oldest cultural products with one of our newest technological advances has resulted in innovation, reinvention, and rediscovery in ways that no one-neither experts nor algorithms- predicted. The internet has mobilized fandom in ways that have rewired the music and film industries, and it’s no surprise that it’s reshaping books as well. Spicy romance, expansive fantasy, page-turning mystery, and emotional fiction are all categories seeing exponential growth because of the #BookTok community,” observes Shannon DeVito, Director of Category Management at Barnes & Noble. “Escapist genre fiction is the name of the game for a lot of trending titles. Their collective enthusiasm sells books to the tune of tens of thousands of copies and millions of dollars. The online landscape of “social read-ia” consists of vibrant communities on TikTok, Instagram, and beyond. ![]() |
